Visit Mesa is giving the Cougar Shadow a playful answer.

The Cougar Shadow Index tracks how often the famous Cougar Shadow appears during its seven-night September viewing period on the Superstition Mountains. The idea came from a review of nearly two decades of historical weather conditions around the shadow’s fall appearance, including cloud cover, precipitation and temperatures.

The theory is simple. If clear skies reveal the Cougar Shadow on most nights, summer may have a little more staying power. If clouds and lingering monsoon weather keep the cougar hidden, cooler fall conditions may be closer.

The prediction applies only to the September Cougar Shadow. The shadow also appears near the March equinox, but the spring appearance is not part of the Cougar Shadow Index.

How the Cougar Shadow Index Works

If the shadow appears on four or more nights during the September viewing week, Visit Mesa predicts that Summer is going to linger.

If the cougar stays hidden on most nights, the prediction flips. Three sightings or fewer point toward fall arriving sooner.
